Measure with a steel tape measure rather than a fabric one for accuracy.
Please measure in centimeters rather than inches.
If you do not have your curtain track in place before measuring, please make a note of where you want it to be fixed to the wall and take your measurement from there. It is best practice to have your track/pole fixed to the wall beforehand as this will give you a more accurate measurement.
Decide where you would like your curtains to hang to. a: to the sill, b: below the sill, or c: to the floor.
Take your measurement from the eye of the metal curtain ring (which hangs slightly below your pole) to your desired length. If you are hanging from a track, take the measurement from the top of the track. For tab top or eyelet curtains take your measurements from the top of the pole (where the ring will sit) to account for the material being situated slightly above the curtain pole.
Measure the length of your track/pole (shown as D on the diagram) excluding any finials.
How to measure for your blinds
Measure with a steel tape measure rather than a fabric one for accuracy.
Please measure in centimeters rather than inches.
Decide whether you want your blind hung outside the recess or inside. Never make the assumption that two windows that look the same, are the same. Especially in older houses! Check and measure each window individually.
Make a note of whether you wish the blind to be operated from the left handside or the right handside.
Measuring outside recess:
As a guide, the width of the blind when hung outside the recess should not extend past the sill.
Take your measurement from one end of the sill to the other and use this as your maximum width. To check whether this is your desired width, mark the same width across the middle of the window and across the top to give you an idea of where the blind will hang. (If your window has no sill, use a length of 5-10cm either side of the window as a guide)
The blind should hang 5-30cm above the window. Make a mark where you want the blind to hang and measure to just below the sill. It is good practice to take 3 measurements across the window just incase the floors are uneven (again, in old houses, this is a MUST). Take the shortest of the three measurements as your finished length.
Measuring inside the recess:
Measure the width of the recess in 3 places (top, middle and bottom) and take the shortest measurement as your finished width.
Do the same for the height of the recess, 3 measurements (left, middle and right) and take the shortest measurement as your finished length.
How to measure for your valance
The valance will need its own track to sit on which is generally wider than the curtain track to account for the fabric return to the wall.
Take the measurements from the valance track and not the curtain track.
Measure the length of the track and please state your desired finished drop, both in centimeters.
How to measure for a pattern repeat
The pattern repeat measurement is taken by measuring from one part of a pattern to exactly where the same part of the pattern repeats itself.
For example, in the picture above, the centre of the flower is taken as the point of measurement. The distance between the two centre points is the pattern repeat.
